Topic: Counseling Transgender and Gender Noncomforming Individuals and their Families

Workshop Description: PANNY is proud to present a four-hour workshop to aid mental health professionals in their work with transgender and gender nonconforming clients. The workshop will cover a variety of topics including practice guidelines for working with transgender and gender nonconforming clients, standards of care, family and partner issues, exploring gender identity in children and adolescents, how to be an advocate, and how to ensure inclusivity at your agency. Attendees will walk away with an understanding of best practices, proper terminology and language to use, and the various roles mental health professionals can have in the lives of people who are transgender or gender-nonconforming.

Speakers: Katherine (Kit) Rachlin, Ph.D. and Acey A. Mercer, LMSW

Dr. Katherine Rachlin (Kit) is a Clinical Psychologist and gender specialist in private practice in New York City, a member of the Board of Directors of The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and the Co-chair of the Task-force to establish The United States Association for Transgender Health (USPATH). She is a coauthor of The Standards of Care for the Health of Transgender, Transsexual and Gender Nonconforming Individuals. Her research papers address topics such as: Flexible Use of the Standards of Care; Access to Health Care; Transgender Individuals' Experiences of Psychotherapy; FTM-Identified Individuals ’ Experience of Hysterectomy; Factors which influence FTM surgical decisions; An Intake Template for Transgender and Genderqueer College Students; and Working Therapeutically with TGNC individuals on the Autism Spectrum.

Acey Mercer is a licensed social worker and Clinical Support Group Manager at Choices Counseling & Consulting in Albany, NY. Acey specializes in counseling children, adolescents and adults questioning and exploring gender and sexual identity related issues. He takes an integrative, collaborative and holistic therapeutic approach and is gender-affirming when conducting assessments, writing transition letters, and making formal referrals for medical interventions. Acey also delivers professional education and consulting services as Senior Consultant of the Training Institute for Gender, Relationships, Identity, and Sexuality (TIGRIS). Housed in the Capital Region, TIGRIS is a state of the art training institute offering in-person and online educational workshops aimed at raising diversity awareness and increasing cultural competency specific to LGBTQ populations. Acey specializes in providing professional consultation, clinical training, as well as policy development and implementation as it relates to best serving transgender and nonbinary populations in medical, mental health and educational institutions.
